Biographical Information
Born in Carlow, Ireland, Captain Wilson had a distinguished military career, rising from a Private to the rank of Captain. He served in the Boer War, was mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the DCM. He married Emily Fairbanks in Scarborough in 1915 and was the drill instructor to the Yorkshire Regiment Territorials.
He was killed on 4/10/15 whilst gallantly leading a charge against the German positions. His Colonel wrote to his widow telling her that “Captain Wilson was always cheery and bright even in the most difficult and arduous circumstances. I wish there were more like him.”
The book the East Yorkshire Regiment in the Great War (Everard Wyrall) details the attack in which he was killed and his commanding officer pulls no punches about how the attack was ill prepared.
The Medal Roll Card shows that his widow applied for his medals in 1921 and they were sent to her at 13 Pavilion Square, Scarborough. His medals were sold in 2006 for £2,300.
