WILSON, Herbert
Biographical Information
Herbert was the son of John H and Elizabeth Wilson of 1 Elmville Avenue and Wrea Lane, Scarborough. He married Minnie and they had a young son, also called Herbert. They lived in Franklin St, Scarborough and Herbwrt worked as a gardener for the Corporation.
In October 1915 the Scarborough Mercury published a photo of Herbert and his four serving brothers, all in uniform. The caption states ” Private Jack Wilson RAMC who entered a house that had been shelled by the Germans and carried a wounded old lady to hospital” The other brothers were Private Reg Wilson (5th Yorks), Private Robert (5th Yorks), and Driver Arthur (ASC)
Herbert was killed on 25/5/1917 aged 27. The letter from his commanding officer informing of his death arrived before the official telegram.
His son Herbert went on to become a teacher in Scarborough, marrying Gladys who had also lost her father in the Great War. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Diana.
Minnie died in 1970 aged 82.
