Biographical Information

Herbert William’s birth was registered in Scarborough in the first quarter of 1882. The next time Herbert appears on the census is 1911 and he is living in Leeds. His address is given as; Marshall and Snelgroves Ltd. 11,Bond Street, Leeds. Herbert is one of 17 people at that address. His job description was given as “Clerk in company
house”. He was 28 years old and single.

In the first quarter of 1915 Herbert married Alice Hopper in Leeds.

He enlisted in Leeds into the Yorkshire Regiment 6th (service) Battalion. The regiment saw action in France and Flanders. In January of 1927 Herbert spent time in “hospital “. His admission form number 15273 tells us he had spent 1 year 8 months in service and of that time 5 months in “field force” his ailment was “shrapnel wounds to the head”. Notes written in the observation column said “ to number 27 ambulance train”. His religion was given on the form as Wesleyan.

Herbert William Purnell died on the 9/10/1917 in Flanders. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial panel 52-56 and 162A. Also on the family grave in Dean Road Cemetery ref EB 51
