Biographical Information
The son of Valentine and Liz Fowler Valentine was educated privately in Thirsk and in Kent before joining the family business of auctioneer and estate agent. He also spent two years studying in Berlin for a career in business.
As a young man he played football for Scarborough Football Club and Captained the side. He was described as a “dashing and powerful” footballer. He joined the Volunteer Force in 1902 and transferred to the Territorial Army when it replaced the V.F.
He married Ida Sarony Dawes in 1896 and they had five children, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1912. Valentine went on to marry Evelyn Weighill in 1913 and they lived at 5 Esplanade Gardens, Scarborough.
Although no longer a member of the Territorial Army, when war broke out Valentine volunteered for service and was involved in a number of severe actions including the Battle of Loos and four battles on the Somme.
He was killed in action by shellfire on 2/6/1917 aged 40. After his death his two daughters Ida Constance Fowler and Elsa Veronica Fowler emigrated to the USA.
