Son of William and Eleanor Frances Chater of Sunderland and Husband of the late Mary Ann Elizabeth Chater (nee Merifield) – married 1873
Frederick and Mary had five children

The SS Lady Ann was on a voyage from Sunderland to Rochester carrying a cargo of coal when she was torpedoed off Scarborough and sunk by a German submarine on the 16th February 1917
