Biographical Information
Clifford was born in Leeds in the fourth quarter of 1887. He first appears on the census of 1891 living at 33, Howden Street, Headingly. Aged 3years he was living with his parents William ( a grocer) and Elizabeth,Clifford was the youngest of their three sons.
By the 1901 census the family had moved to 12, Queens Road Headingly and Clifford is 13 years old. Little can be found after that although an
Obituary in the Newcastle Journal informs us that before joining up Clifford worked for Pumphrey and Couch, who dealt in fine teas and coffees and ran a café business in central Newcastle .
Clifford joined the Northumberland Fusiliers and gained the rank of corporal. He was dicharged having been commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and moved to the Yorks and Lancaster.He was killed in action on the Western Front on the 18th September 1917.
On September the 26th 1917 the following obituary appeared in the Newcastle Journal.
“Second Lieutenant Clifford Whiteley,York and Lancaster Regiment youngest son of Mr. A and Mrs. William Whiteley, 54, Royal Avenue Scarborough. Late with Messrs. Pumphrey and Carrick Ltd. Newcastle- on –Tyne.”
Clifford Whiteley is interred in the New Irish Farm Cemetery ref.sp mem XXVIII A 5. Also in Dean Road Cemetery on the gravestone of his great aunt. FB 87
