How Can We Help?
TURNBULL, William Andrew
Biographical Information
William was the son of Henry and Fanny Turnbull, who followed his father into the legal profession and was a solicitor. The family home was 13 Grosvenor Road, Scarborough. When war broke out he joined the 5th Yorks as a private but was later granted a commission. He was wounded, and in June 1915 the Scarborough Pictorial printed an interesting account of his experiences, naming other Scarborough men and a Scarborough doctor, Dr Libbey, who treated him.
Lieutenant Turnbull had been a Scout Master with the 4th Scarborough Troop (Holy Trinity) and had organised numerous camps. He was formerly honorary secretary to The RSPCA and was described as being a churchman of fine Christian character.
He was killed by shell fire on 17/7/1916 aged 37.
