Biographical Information

George was born in Sheffield, 333 Shoreham St, son of Joseph and Rosette (from Douglas, Isle of Man). He was one of four children. His father was a grocers’ manager. In the 1891 census George was aged 14 at 56 North Marine Road Scarborough. He married Ethel Mary Graves on 11/8/1902. In the 1911 census they lived at 16 Stanley View, Douglas, IOM where George was a cafe manager. He enlisted in Folkestone on 13/1/1916 and shipped to Boulogne on 20/8/1916, where he remained until his death of wounds at No 8 Casualty Hospital, near Arras, France. His widow Ethel received a war pension of 13s 9d per week. His effects returned were listed as photographs, a heavy gold ring (plain), 2 diaries, 2 cookery books, and a tea maker. He left a will, with effects of £107.
