Biographical Information

Arthur was born in Scarborough, son of George E and Sarah H of Taylor Cottage, Friars Entry, the same entry as Walter Sowersby, also remembered in the cemetery. His father was a cab driver, and later a chauffeur. Arthur attended St Paul’s Mission and from age 8 to 12 he attended St Mary’s Anglican School. He started work as an errand boy and was promoted to delivery man for Alfred Maynard, grocer of 82a Castle Road. He joined up in May 1915. The Pals were charged with taking ammunition to the battle area using 18 teams of horses. Arthur was killed by shrapnel from shell fire.
