Biographical Information

Charles was born in Scarborough, son of house painter John and Elizabeth of 32 Caledonia St. Aged 13 Charles was apprenticed to painter and decorator George Bradley and Sons. After Elizabeth died the family moved to York where Charles was employed by Hartley and Sons of 28 Blake Dt York, again as a painter and decorator. In 1905 Charles married Lucy Eleanor Lindsay and they had four sons. He enlisted in 1914. On 30/6/1915 Charles embarked at Liverpool on the Empress of Britain, bound for the Mediterranean. He was evacuated from Gallipoli 19/12/1915, going on to Egypt and from there to France. He was reported missing in action in October 2016, and confirmed killed in action on 10/8/1917.
