Biographical Information

Walter was one of eight sons and 4 daughters of George Thomas and Frances Sowerby, living in Friars Yard, Scarborough. He left Friarage School at 13 to become an apprentice plumber. Walter enlisted in 1916 aged 20, and was a gunner in the Tank Corps. On 27/9/1916, near Arras, France, he was grievously wounded and died the same day. His parents were first told that he had been wounded in the arm, and only later received the telegram informing them of his death.
