REED, Thomas William
Biographical Information
Thomas was born on the 31/09/1891 in Scarborough and appears on the 1991 census as the only son of William and Mary Jane Reed his age is given as 0. His father’s occupation was a “Coachman domestic “. The family were living in Commercial Street. On the 9/03/1892 Thomas William was baptised at Christ Church.
By the 1901 census the family had moved to 52 Hoxton Road. The father was then a cab proprietor working for his own account. Thomas was then 10 years old. He had 5 younger siblings,Mabel 8, Edward 6,Daisy 4, Frederick 3 and Lilly 1.
Thomas enlisted in Scarborough in the Household Cavalry the 20th Hussars. He died on the21/09/1914. His place of death is given as “home” as was the theatre of war. There is a death of Thomas W Reed recorded in Colchester in September 1914 ( the battalion was stationed in Colchester). On the family grave in Dean Road Cemetery ref EB. 16 it says of him…Pte Thos. WM. Reed, 20th Hussars died in hospital 21st Sept. 1914 aged 23 years.
Thomas was interred in Colchester Cemetery ref.F.11.71. He is also remembered on Oliver’s Mount War Memorial.
