Biographical Information
Arthur’s birth was registered in the third quarter of 1885. He first appears on the 1891 census, aged 5, son of Lewis ( a jet worker) and Eliza Oldridge. The family at this time lived at 46, Quay Street, Arthur had an older brother William and younger brother Robert.
The 1901 census shows the family living at 3, St. Helens Square. His father is now a publican, brother William a tailor and Arthur, aged 15,a bricklayer’s apprentice.
On June 6th 1908 Arthur married Ethel Crawford at St. Mary’s church.
By the 1911 census Arthur and his wife together with their daughter, Annie, aged 1year were living at 8, East Sandgate and Arthur was working as a grocer.
Arthur joined the Yorkshire regiment 6th battalion and saw action in Belgium. He died of wounds received in action at Ypres on 20/08/1917.
His will said “To Ethel Oldridge widow effects £299-0-0d.”
Arthur is interred at Sainte Maria Cemetery near Le Havre. He is also commemorated on Oliver’s Mount War Memorial and on a family stone in Dean Road Cemetery.F 171
