Biographical Information

Christopher was born in Scarborough, 5th of 8 children of Jonathan Walker Nightingale, a ship’s fireman, and Annie Elizabeth, of 95!Longwestgate. Christopher attended Friarage School and enlisted in 1914 with his older brother James, at Worksop. He served in France and in Nivember 1916 his parents were informed that he was missing in action, hearing nothing more until the following year when a letter from the War Office stated “As no further news has been heard of your son it must therefore be presumed that he is missing in action”.
Two brothers also served. Albert returned to Scarborough to work as a ship’s fireman and went down with the Jack Johnson when it hit a mine on 4/9/1920. James also survived the war.
