Biographical Information
Albert Edward Mitchell was the son of James and Margaret Mitchell and was born on 19/12/1887 in Scarborough.He was baptised at St. Mary’s church on 22/01/1888, the family were living at 4, Vine Street.
Albert first appears on the1891 census. The family are still living in Vine Street. His fathers occupation is given as a cabinet maker. Albert is 3 years old (his birth year is given as 1888).
By the 1901 census the family are living at 13, Victoria Street. Jane Mitchell is given as head of the household and is described as a widow. On this return Jane is still classed as “ wife” under relationship yet under “marital status” puts “widow”.
Edwards death is recorded on his gravestone as 27/07/1901. Three sisters all working are recorded, Albert is 13 years old and there is also a female lodger.
By the 1911 census the family are living at 43, Grange Avenue. Albert is 23 still living at home and working as a clerk.
The top half of Albert’s enlistment papers have been badly damaged but it is possible to see he was still working as a clerk and was married to Margaret and living in York. The address being 11, Earlsborough Terrace, The Esplanade, York. Albert served with the Royal Army Service Corps
(Mechanical Transport ) on the Western Front. He died in France on 29/111918.
He is interred at Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.
