Biographical Information
Daughter of Dublin born George and Brighton born Esther McLaughlin, Maria was born in Agra, India. Maria’s father had been a regular soldier with the Royal Artllery but following musical training he was appointed bandmaster to the 2nd York and Lancaster Regiment with which he served in Barbados, South Africa, Mauritius and India. The 1911 census shows the family living at Ivy Dene, Manor Road, when Mary was school age, and her older sister Esther was a pupil teacher.
Maria and her sister both died from influenza within six days of each other, while on war service with the VAD. Maria was 21 and her sister 25. They had no brothers or sisters. Both died at home, which by then was 219 Prospect Road, Scarborough, and their father was present when they died.
