MAWMAN, Walter
Biographical Information
Walter was born in Scarborough, son of George and Mary Ann of 7 Rothbury Street. He worked as a bricklayer. He served in Mesopotamia, as did his brother Harold. Walter died of wounds, whilst Harold died of heatstroke.
The Scarborough Mercury 9/2/1917 reported “News has been received by Mr George Mawman, now residing in Leeds, late of 7 Rothbury Dtreet, that his son, Private Walter Mawman, Wiltshire Regiment, has been killed in Mesopotamia. Private Mawamn used to live at 6 Britannia Street. He died on Sunday January 21st from gunshot wounds in the head. He was a member of the National Reserve Band, and by trade a bricklayer in the employ of Mr G Johnson, Ramshill Road. mr Mawman has five sone, and four are now in the army. His brother, Mr W Mawman, 7 Spring Bank, has four sons and one son-in-law serving”
