MASON, Herbert Park
Biographical Information
Herbert was the son of William and Rebecca Mason who lived at 61 Gladstone Road, Scarborough. His father was employed as a joiner.
Herbert had been in the Territorials and was mobilised at the outbreak of war. Prior to their he has been employed by MrDalton, stationed, of Newborough. He went to France on 20/4/1915 and during his 30 months service he had only 10 days leave.
Reporting his death the Mercury of 9/11/1917 quoted two of his chums. One said “It may come as some consolation to know that he suffered no pain. A piece from a shell which exploded near him killed him instantly.” Another wrote “A braver and more cheerful chum we never had. Every man in the battery mourns for him”
The report also mentioned a brother who had been gassed recently and a brother who had sided of wounds.
