MAINPRIZE, Thomas Johnson
Biographical Information
Thomas was born in Scarborough in the first quarter of 1878. The son of Samuel and Jane Mainprize. He first appears on the 1881 census aged 2 years at the time the family were living at 7, Prospect Road. There were two older sisters Edith and Emma. His father was a joiner.
The 1901 census shows the family still living in Prospect Road. Thomas by then being 22 years old was working as a tailor.
In the first quarter of 1905 Thomas married Mary Horsman and the 1911 census shows Thomas to be living at 27 Prospect Road with his wife and five children,(4 daughters and a son) and he himself still working as a tailor.
Thomas enlisted in Scarborough in the Yorkshire Regiment the 5th battalion. He was killed on the Somme on the 13th fo September 1916 aged 38.
Thomas is interred at Flatiron Copse Cemetery,Mametz.he is also commemorated on Oliver’s Mount and on the family gravestone in Dean Road cemetery FB 90
