Biographical Information
George was the son of Henry and Rachel Laybourne of 9 Auborough Street, Scarborough. He went to Friarage School.
1911 census shows Henry Laybourne as a compositor and George as a boot shop assistant (IWM records show him as a boat shop assistant – record added by a David Oliver)
Enlisted in Scarborough.
George served with a machine gun section of the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment and on 28/4/1915 the Scarborough Pictorial published a photograph of the Section.
On 25th May that year his family were informed that he had been wounded and put in an ambulance but in July the Pictorial reported that nothing else had been heard of him since then. In the same month the Mercury quotes a comrade saying “I think it is all over with George Laybourne as he has not been heard of since he was wounded on Whit Tuesday morning”
It was nor until November 1916 that the Mercury reported that George, previously reported as wounded and missing between May 25th and 28th 1915, is now reported as killed.
His brother Walter served with the Canadian Army and brother Alfred with the Army Service Corps.
