LANCASTER, James Ernest
Biographical Information
James was born in Scarborough, son of James and Mary Elizabeth, of 36 Cambridge Street. He married Rose Louisa Masheder and they lived at 53 Nelson Street, Scarborough. He worked as a signal man on the railway.
James enlisted in Scarborough in November 1915 and served on the Somme.
On 18/5/1917 the Scarborough Mercury reported “N.E.R. Employee killed- Private J.E. Lancaster, K.O.Y.L.I., 53 Nelson Street, and son of ex P.C. Lancaster, is reported to have been killed on April 14TH. He was originally reported wounded. Private Lancaster was 31 years of age and leaves a widow and one child. He joined the Railway Battalion, being employed by the N.E.R., in June 1916, and was then transferred to the Yorkshire Light Infantry. He went to France last November”
