Biographical Information

Henry was born in Scarborough, son of fish salesman George and Mary. He joined the navy as a boy 2nd class on a wage of 6d per day and rose through the ranks to petty officer 1st class by 7/3/1911. In the 1911 census he was on board the ship “Newcastle” in Hong Kong. He was described as 5′ 4″ tall, with brown hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. Henry joined the Formidable on 14/1/1914. The battleship was mined or torpedoed and sunk with the loss of around 150 lives. His body was never found.
