HARLAND, Richard
Biographical Information
Richard was the son of Edward and Maria Harland born circa 1886. The family lived at 165 Falsgrave Road and in the 1891 census Edward was described as being an Auctioneer, Valuer and Estate Agent. Richard at this time was 4 years old his older siblings were all still at school. In the 1901 census brother Albert was 22 and an auctioneer and estate agent. Richard and Edward are both at school Richard being 14. Sarah his older sister was 23. Edmund Starkey 72 (father in law ) was also staying in the house, as was Jane A Horner aged 22 a general domestic.
By the 1911 census Marie was a widow.She still lived at 165 Falsgrave Road (Poplar Villa) and daughter Sarah then 33 was still at home. As was Richard who at 33 worked as a solicitor on his “own account”. The family had one servant Evelyn Dunlevey.
In the third quarter of 1914 Richard married Lily C Richardson in Scarborough.
In the First World War Richard served in the Royal Garrison Artillery 254 Siege Battalion gaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant . He was killed in action on the 16/06/1918.
He is interred in the Morbecque British Cemetery (plot 1 row G grave14 ). He is also commemorated on the family grave in Dean Road Cemetery ref EB.60.
