Biographical Information

Alfred was born in Scarborough, brother of James Wilfrid, who was also killed in action. His parents were John Henry, a joiner, and Annie, of 160 Prospect Road. Alfred left school in 1896 and was apprenticed as a painter and decorator to Johnson Wanless and Sons, 31 Westborough. He enlisted in May 1915, when he was living at 81 Dean Road. On 24/8/1917 the Scarborough Mercury announced that his severe wounds had proved fatal. He was buried near to the hospital at St Omer where he died.
