Born 26.9.1896 in Doncaster. Baptised 14.12.1896, St George, Doncaster, father Thomas (Watchmaker) & mother, Annie Elizabeth of 6 Waterdale (NB named after his paternal grandfather, Arthur W Fretwell, Jeweller of Doncaster). 1901 census living at 26 Waterdale, Doncaster, parents Thomas (Jeweller) & Annie E Fretwell & Arthur R, age 4. 1911 census living at Derwent House School, Bamford, Nr Sheffield, Arthur R, age 14 (Boarder), his parents were still at the same address in Doncaster.
Derwent House School, Bamford, Peak District: Provided “Thorough and Practical Education (Professional or Commercial) for a limited number of boys. Individual attention. Very successful in examinations. Extensive playing fields. Gymnasium. Testimonials, prospectus, etc, from Head Master, S H Johnson (London Univ.).” Previously Arthur attended Beechfield Junior Boys (British) School, Doncaster – 1903 National School Admissions Registers.
