Medals:
One of over 7000 men from United Kingdom & South Africa commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, France who have no known grave. Battle of Cambrai began with an attack by the Allies 20-29 November 1917, followed by a German counter-attack lasting 5 days which saw the loss of much of the ground gained in the initial advance. Clarence was killed on the first day of the German counter-attack.
CWGC show when Clarence was killed he served in The King’s (Liverpool Regiment). However, on his grandparents’ grave the initials are “KLS” & on War Memorial in Holy Trinity Church it says “London Scottish”.

1895 born in Scarborough. 1911 census living at 23 Raleigh Street, Scarborough, parents William (Tailor) & Emily (nee Brown) Fleming, son Clarence, age 15 & daughter Phyllis, age 9. CWGC gives parents’ address as 6 West Square, Scarborough.

Inscription

(1) In/loving memory of/Pte C FLEMING/359764 KLS/grandson of the above/missing at Cambria/Nov 30th 1917/aged 22 years/Till we meet again (separate tablet resting at the foot of the grave of Richardson & Mary Brown, Clarence’s maternal grandparents) NB misspelling on stone ‘Cambria’.
(2) In/loving memory of/WILLIAM FLEMING/died March 5th 1932 aged 61 years/also CLARENCE son of the above/missing at Cambrai Nov 30th 1917/aged 22 years “Better by far you should forget and smile/than you should remember and be sad”/also PHYLLIS/daughter of the above/died Oct 29th 1936 aged 34 years/also of EMILY FLEMING/wife of the above/died Jan 5th 1958 aged 86 years.
