Biographical Information

Septimus, known as Willie, was born in Scarborough, son of bricklayer Joseph and Ellen of 117 Prospect Road and in 1911 112 Hoxton Road. He was baptised at Dt Mary’s and attended Central School until the age of 12. He worked for the Co-op on Victoria Toad, first as an errand boy and then a delivery man.

He first joined the Army Service Corps and was transferred to the newly formed Scarborough battery of the Royal Field Artillery. His death was reported in the Mercury on 14/7/1917, where he was described as a well known local swimmer. His parents were first told that he had been wounded but a letter from an army chaplain confirmed that he had died and had been buried locally.
