Biographical Information

Samuel Manson Cole was born in Scarborough in October 1897.He first appears in the census of 1901 aged three. In this census his father Samuel Manson is recorded as being a widower. There is a record of a marriage of Samuel Manson to Selina ( also spelled Celina) Cole in the fourth quarter of 1897 and a record of the death of a Selina Manson in March 1900.Also on the 1901 census is a Mary Jane Manson born in the fourth quarter of 1899.the family lived at 2, Salisbury street.

By the 1911 census Samuel ( the father, a gas stoker) has re-married. In 1903 he married Emily Ives.The family by this time is living at 6, Princess Street.Also living with them is Mary Ives aged 75 described as mother-in-law. Samuel Manson is 14 years old, a scholar.

Samuel Manson Coles army record shows him to have been a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers 3rd battalion (reserves) the third battalion provided regular drafts to the 1st and 2nd battalions both of which saw action in France and Belgium.

Samuel died on 24/11/1918.
