Biographical Information
He was the second son of Robert and Jeannie, born in Leeds 1895. Jeannie had died before the 1911 census and the family of four boys had been taken care of by other family members; John cannot be found in this census. The records of the Hampshire Regiments show John enlisted at Winchester, as a regular soldier, in 1912 and was allocated to the 1st Battalion. His elder brother Robert also enlisted about the same time. He was promoted to an Unpaid Lance-Corporal in April 1913 and was a paid Lance-Corporal by September. John Catley entered a theatre of war (Gallipoli) with the 2nd Battalion on 29th April 1915, four days after the initial landing. He was killed in action on 6th August 1915 which was a day of particularly heavy fighting and the regiment lost 18 officers and 224 other ranks killed or missing. Twenty seven were listed as killed on that day. Unlike many who fell at Gallipoli, Cpl Catley has a grave in the Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery.
