Biographical Information
Douglas was the son of Robert and Jeanie, born at Leeds in 1897. Following the death of his mother in 1906 he went to live with his Uncle, William Overton and his wife Hannah Elizabeth. They lived at 2 Queen Street Balby, Doncaster, but when Douglas enlisted he was lodging with Mrs Richards, 25 Queen Street; he was employed as a clerk. Douglas enlisted at Doncaster on 7th November 1914 and he was allocated to the 6th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. On his attestation form he gave his age as 19 years and 6 months; his correct age was 17 years and 6 months. He was fairly small, standing at 5 ft 4 inches and weighed a little over 8 stone, brown eyes and dark brown hair. Whilst he was “at Home” he over stayed a pass by 4 days 23 hrs and 45 mins; it cost him 5 days pay. His service record shows he eventually joined the Expeditionary Force Mediterranean Force in the Dardanelles on 2nd July 1915. He was killed 40 days later; 10th August 1915. His next of kin was his three brothers [Robert, John and Donald] and his landlady Mrs Richards had been added some time later. It was not until February 1917 that his personal effects were forwarded to his landlady, Mrs Richards. At that time John had been killed and the other men were away on active service. His landlady also received his war medals on April 2nd 1919 . Brother of Donald and John Catley
