Biographical Information
Harold’s birth was registered in the second quarter of 1898 in Scarborough. He first appears in the 1901 census aged 3 years. The family were living at 12,Blaydon Street, Throston, Hartlepool , County Durham.His father William aged 40 was the master of a fishing vessel, his mother, Mary Ann was 41. His elder brother Herbert was 18 and an “Apprentice steam engine maker fitter “. Harry at 15 was a Telegraph Messenger. Walter 10, Ernest 8 and sisters Jane R Aged12 and Gertrude 6 were still at school. Also in the house was Sarah J Dove who was married and described as a visitor.
The 1911 census shows that the family were still living in Hartlepool but had moved to 6, Cliff Terrace. William was described as being the manager of a steam trawler. Harry 25 was a ship store keeper Jane helped at home. Walter was a ships blacksmith, Gertrude an apprentice dressmaker. Harold at 13 was still at school.
Harold joined the Yorkshire Regiment 9th Battalion and fought in Belgium. He died on the 20th of September 1917. He was interred in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnerbeke, West Flanders. Next of kin was given as William Cappleman of 62, Scalby Road, Scarborough.
Harold is commemorated on Oliver’s Mount War Memorial and in Dean Road Cemetery ref E 205.
