Biographical Information
William was born in Scarborough and grew up in Bedford Street, with his parents and five older siblings. His mother was widowed when William was two months old.
He enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1916 and served in France. After being wounded in 1917, William was treated at Birmingham War Hospital before being medically discharged in February 1918.
He returned to work as a self employed sign writer and married in 1920. They had two children and bought a house in Clifton Street. He died in 1928 at the age of 34.
Having survived active service he was killed by septicemia (a carbuncle on his shoulder was not properly treated and there were no antibiotics then)
