Biographical Information
Born in 1892 in Scarborough, George was the son of Thomas and Jessie Anderson. In the 1911 census they were recorded as living at 27 Potter Lane, Scarborough. George was a fisherman. In April 1915, soon after the death of his mother he joined the Royal Navy Reserve. Records note that he was five feet four and a half inches tall and had a fair complexion and blue eyes. He was assigned to the paddle steamer Lady Ismay, which was built in 1911 by Alisa Ship Building Company, Troon and launched on 1/6/11. It was a passenger steamer capable of carrying 1,000 passengers and was called up at the beginning of WW1 and converted at Bristol for minesweeping duties. It struck a mine off Harwich on 21/12/1915. George’s body was never recovered. His brother Henry was also killed in WW1 in 1916.
